“Kaitokudo for the 21st Century” is the center of knowledge networks, established to transmit and connect the eagerness to learn of “Kaitokudo,” an academic institution founded by merchants in Osaka in 1724, to the current era.
Kaitokudo for the 21st Century is an organization that plays an important role in expanding and supporting the circle of society-university co-creation, in which the university learns and creates something with society, through outreach activities that connect the university with the community, society, and citizens.

What is Kaitokudo for the 21st Century?

Kaitokudo Kaitokudo

The University of Osaka has two spiritual origins. One is “Tekijuku” established by Koan Ogata and the other is "Kaitokudo," an academic institution founded in 1724 by merchants in Osaka for the purpose of self-improvement through study beyond the boundaries of social status. “Kaitokudo for the 21st Century” was founded in 2008 to inherit the aspirations of Kaitokudo and to become a place for learning with the public and the center of knowledge networks.

The University of Osaka aims to return the results of its educational and research activities from the university to society, to discover new issues while thinking together with society, to bring them back to the field of education and research, and to produce results that will contribute to the further development of society. At the University of Osaka, which carries out its activities guided by this cycle of contribution, Kaitokudo for the 21st Century serves as an organization that brings the spirit of the original Kaitokudo—one of the university’s spiritual origins—to the present day. Through outreach activities that connect the university with the local community, society, and the public, the university plays a vital role in expanding and supporting the circle of society-university co-creation.

Kaitokudo for the 21st Century Director Takemura, Keiko

Kaitokudo for the 21st Century,” founded in 2008 to carry on the philosophy of “Kaitokudo,” one of the spiritual origins of the University of Osaka, promotes the spirit of learning together with ordinary people and continues to serve as a hub for “knowledge networks” that connects the university with the public.
At the university, Kaitokudo for the 21st Century plays a key role in outreach activities that communicate the outcomes of the educational and research efforts to society. While more than 40 organizations, including graduate schools, faculties, research institutes, and centers, carry out their own diverse activities, Kaitokudo actively promotes its initiatives highlighting the collaboration between the university and society and offering spaces where a wide range of social issues can be addressed together with society. Through these society-university co-creation efforts, Kaitokudo for the 21st Century contributes to the university’s mission of becoming an institution that fosters “a society where people find purpose in life.”
One of our main initiatives is the “UOsaka OPEN LECTURE.” These lectures are not simply one-way presentations, but opportunities to engage in dialogue with participants, think together, identify new challenges, and spark the creation of future educational and research endeavors. In this sense, the Open Lecture embodies the university’s motto: “Live locally, grow globally.”
With the enduring spirit of Kaitokudo—“learning with citizens”—we will continue to communicate the present-day, open nature of the University of Osaka and dedicate ourselves to society-university co-creation activities. We sincerely ask for your continued understanding and support for Kaitokudo for the 21st Century.
